God reminds Israel of her history and His relationship with her. A covenant relationship that not only needed mending it needed renewal.

Ezekiel 16:60

  “Nevertheless I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your older and your younger sisters; for I will give them to you for daughters, but not because of My covenant with you. 62 And I will establish My covenant with you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,” says the Lord God.’ ”

Ezekiel_006 The Messianic Temple and River of Life

 

Some believe when we die we spend and eternity in heaven.  When the Messiah returns for the second coming His saints return with him.    

The Biblical Basis for the Messianic Kingdom

It is the extensive prophetic writings, as well as all of these covenants, that provide the basis for the belief in a future Messianic Kingdom, and not merely one chapter in Revelation which is a highly symbolic book. There are many passages in the entire Bible that speak about the Messianic Kingdom.  These are real not imaginary. While the Bible uses symbolism, one should not brush away truth because of ignorance.  Unless these passages are understood literally, they lose all meaning in the context in which they are found. To allegorize such a vast amount of material is to render a major part of the Bible meaningless. The Bible is truth not imagination.
